EDWARD LIU is a senior associate at Reed Smith Richards Butler. After graduated from Shanghai Maritime University with a bachelor of laws in 2008, he studied at the University of Southampton and obtained a master of laws in maritime law in 2009. Qualified as a solicitor in England & Wales and a lawyer in China, Edward specializes in shipping and commercial litigation and arbitration. His practice covers all areas of maritime and commercial law, including charterparty and shipbuilding contract disputes, MOA matters, cargo claims, general average, marine insurance and sale of goods disputes. He is a vice-president of The Hong Kong and Mainland Legal Profession Association, a member of Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and an adjunct lecturer at HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education. Edward is a regular contributor to the English leading shipping law newsletter – “Shipping & Trade Law”. He has also published numerous articles and case commentaries in respect of shipping and commercial legal topics in other reputable journals and newsletters in England, China and Hong Kong. In addition, he has published various articles in Hong Kong newspapers discussing the promotion of Hong Kong shipping service and in particular, Hong Kong maritime dispute resolution services. Edward has frequently been invited to give speeches to different organizations and interviewed by media in relation to maritime practice and shipping-related topics. In December 2017, Edward Liu was listed as one of Top 5 Next Generation in Shipping and recommended as “a leading heavyweight lawyer of the future in the marketing and symbolizes a ‘new generation’ of Asian lawyers”. In August 2016 and 2017, Edward was shortlisted twice as one of the three finalists for “The Next Generation Award”, one of the Lloyd’s List Asia & Pacific Awards 2016, in acknowledgement of his work received well recognisation in the shipping industry. In March 2015, Edward was honoured to be one of “The Ten Outstanding New Hong Kong Young Persons”, in commending his outstanding working performance and social responsibility to the Hong Kong society.
